Geumhodong House, Seoul, South Korea
New build

Location : Kumhodong, South Korea
Client : Private
Year : 2013
Under construction. to be completed on December in 2014

This four-storey housing project explores how light, landscape and privacy can be integrated within a compact urban site in Seoul. The building is conceived as a solid brick volume, responding to the scale and material character of the surrounding neighbourhood.

At street level, the building is recessed to create a more open threshold between the public street and the homes above. The brick façade is carefully punctured with windows and recessed openings, introducing depth and controlled views while maintaining privacy within the dense urban context.

At the upper level, the architecture changes character through a large sloping glazed structure that extends across the building. This light-filled space brings natural daylight deep into the plan and creates a stronger connection to the sky, while integrated planting softens the transition between interior and exterior.

The design is organised as a sequence of solid and transparent layers. Brick provides enclosure, privacy and permanence, while glazing introduces light, views and openness.

The project explores how a compact residential building can create a sense of openness and connection within the density of Seoul.
