Old Paradise Yard

Master Plan

Location : Waterloo, UK

Client : Private

Year : 2013

Stage: Concept design

Situated in Waterloo, minutes from the South Bank and alongside Archbishop’s Park, Old Paradise Yard is a unique cluster of historic and converted buildings, including an original schoolhouse and former Tibetan Buddhist Centre.
The masterplan builds upon the character of the existing buildings and their enclosed garden setting, creating a distinctive environment for a growing creative community.
At the heart of the site, a serene garden is sheltered by mature trees, providing a shared out-door space and an atmospheric setting for the surrounding studios. The landscape forms an important part of the masterplan, creating a calm contrast to the intensity of the surrounding city.
Old Paradise Yard is home to artists, makers, musicians, writers and creative entrepreneurs. Rather than functioning simply as a collection of individual studios, the masterplan encour-ages a close-knit community, where different creative practices can meet, exchange ideas and develop through informal interaction.
The relationship between buildings, landscape and shared spaces creates a series of intimate environments across the site. Existing architecture and mature planting provide the character, while the masterplan strengthens the connections between the individual studios and the wid-er creative community.

Old Paradise Yard is ultimately conceived as a place where work, creativity and community come together — a small, distinctive enclave within the urban fabric of Waterloo.
